Awesome piece! I'm a little biased because I'm a chef / restaurant person so the cooking references are right up my alley. But this should be shared far and wide!
Thanks, Arthur! Ha - glad the cooking reference resonated with you. Funny, I have four burners on my own stove (in really life, not metaphorically speaking) and I've found that it's impossible to have more than three going and even 3 is a pain in the butt because the pots/pans get in the way. I coulda have gone down the rabbit hole with that metaphor, but decided to keep those tangents out.
I'm cooking all the time (literally and metaphorically) The food biz is a tough one, it almost feels like a sport in itself with the type of business and role that I have. Got back into running ahead of my 50th birthday so this July I'll be going into my 5th year of marathon training. It's been tough breaking my body back into shape, a lot of tough physical learning experiences. Just now trying to get over an injury. But over these past few years I have become more congniscent of everything that I've got cooking and have learned to start fine-tuning those burners not just to become a better athlete but to become a better and wholisticallly healthier person in each of those areas. While my running goals and the possibility of me holding on to those goals may not be guaranteed I don't take for granted how training has helped me to be more intentional and focused on those other pans I've got simmering. And when I say "running" has helped me refocus it's also the stuff that folks like you are putting out there to read and learn from. Being an older athlete I originally learned about you also through MIke Trees, so I appreciate the perspective on training and life that comes from some of the masters who are sharing their wisdom with the masses. A long answer to your question! Chicago marathon is on the schedule for this fall, waiting to see if I get into Boston as I qualified at Chicago in 2024 - but they moved the BQ time 5 min which means I've only got a 4:58 buffer - but I got that far in just a few years so if my body allows I'll be balancing those burners to continue to work towards that BQ goal.
Loved this... so much good stuff in here and you're a 50+ runner. Heck yeah!!! #PerformBetterAsYouAge.
Totally feel you on the “cooking all the time” vibe. Running, business, life... all the burners need attention.
Sorry for the slow reply—just got back from a few weeks training in Ethiopia. So many reminders over there about patience, simplicity, and showing up daily. Sounds like you’re living that.
Rooting for you with Chicago and fingers crossed for Boston. Keep those burners steady.

Are you training for anything specific?
